International Living

I hope I can be of help if you're living overseas as we face the differences/pleasures of living abroad together!

Please see posts labeled Portugal or Germany for experiences I've written about living in those countries. You will still get a taste of how we live overseas in every post since they've all been written over here!

I find that the longer I live in a country, the more I find resources that will help and get a correct idea of what to really stock up on in America! I have been pleasantly encouraged at what can be found at flea markets, dollar stores (canvases are cheap!), and whatever venues the country has for creativity. In Germany, some of my favorite stores for supplies were Das Depot, Pflanzen Kohle, Listmann and Karstadt. There were also knitting and fabric shops if you looked for them. German eBay had some decent options as well. In Portugal, I've found bead shops, fabric shops ("tecido" in Portuguese), retrosarias, school supply stores, and dollar stores again being great resources.

If you are considering bringing a U.S. sewing machine (110 volt) it will work with the right transformer. I use a Seven Star TC-300 transformer.  They weigh 8 lbs, so keep that in mind if you want to ship one over!Smaller tranformers have not worked with it or my American blender and juicer. You can use a plug converter with lamps from America so don't leave them at home!

Check out The Book Depository for free shipping on books worldwide (and it seems the prices are not inflated because of it!).

Please contact me if you have any questions. I'd love to share with you what has or hasn't worked for us living over here or try to find the answer for you.
